Wherever the density and concentration of chemically aggressive liquids need to be measured reliably, hydrometers for special applications come into use. In the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, hydrometers for acids are used to determine the concentration of hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, potassium hydroxide solution or ammonia. In the mineral oil industry and in research laboratories they support the analysis of process liquids; in the food and beverage industry they are used, for example, to check sodium chloride solutions. Media such as sea water, latex and hydrogen peroxide can also be tested precisely with the appropriate versions. As a battery acid tester, a hydrometer is also used in workshops and maintenance to assess the condition of battery acid.

On all instruments, the paper scale is sealed inside the glass stem and made resistant to acid and alkali, so it remains reliably readable even after prolonged contact with aggressive media. Depending on the version, they cover a density range of 0.990 to 1.300 g/cm³ or a concentration range of 0 to 96 % w/w and reach an accuracy of up to 0.0001 g/cm³ at a reference temperature of up to +80 °C.
