Applications in hydrocarbon measurement

Hydrocarbon measurement on liquid gases places particular demands on the instrument used, because the liquid state is stable only under pressure. Hydrometers for liquid gases are used wherever the measurement of hydrocarbons must be carried out precisely and in line with the relevant standards. In the mineral oil industry they support quality control of liquid-gas mixtures and incoming inspection of propane, butane and similar media. In the chemical and pharmaceutical industries they are used for process monitoring as well as for analyses in research and development. They are also found in the food and beverage industry, for example in quality assurance of products that contain propellant gases.

Design and technical features as a measuring instrument for gases

To capture density and temperature of liquid gases reliably under pressure, every measuring instrument for gases we manufacture is fitted with an integrated thermometer that uses metallic filling. The thermometer bulb is additionally enclosed in a glass protective sleeve, which prevents measurement errors caused by pressure acting on the bulb. This design feature is essential for reliable density measurement of liquids with hydrometers under real process conditions. The instruments cover a measuring range of 0.500 to 0.650 g/cm³ and reach an accuracy of ±0.0005 g/cm³ at a reference temperature of 15 °C (60/60 °F). They are manufactured to DIN 12804 and ASTM E100-19, the relevant standards for hydrocarbon measurement with hydrometers.

Mercury thermometers: EU ban on placing on the market and export

In the standard-compliant version, hydrometers for liquid gases to DIN 12804 and ASTM E100-19 include an integrated thermometer with mercury filling. The manufacture, placing on the market and export of mercury-containing measuring instruments are prohibited within the European Union, so this version is not permitted for sale or use in the EU.

A hydrometer for liquid gases is used to determine the density of liquid hydrocarbons such as propane, butane and their mixtures. Measurement takes place in the liquid state, which is maintained by a vapour pressure of up to 15 bar at +15 °C. The density readings provide information about the composition and quality of the liquid gas.

For the measurement of hydrocarbons in the liquid state, DIN 12804 and ASTM E100-19 are the most relevant standards. Our hydrometers for liquid gases are consistently manufactured to these standards, which ensures internationally recognised comparability of measurement results.

The standard-compliant version to DIN 12804 and ASTM E100-19 includes an integrated thermometer with mercury filling. Because of the mercury content, these instruments are subject to a ban on placing on the market and export within the EU.

Under pressure, the thermometer bulb could deform and distort the temperature reading. The additional glass protective sleeve isolates the bulb from the surrounding pressure and so prevents measurement errors. This design detail is a fundamental feature for reliable density measurement of liquids with the hydrometer in liquid-gas applications.

Our hydrometers cover a measuring range of 0.500 to 0.650 g/cm³ and reach an accuracy of ±0.0005 g/cm³ at a reference temperature of 15 °C (60/60 °F). They are therefore designed for the common propane-butane mixtures and comparable media.
