API Hydrometers – Measuring the Density of Crude Oil and Petroleum

Our API hydrometers enable the exact determination of the density of crude oil and petroleum products in laboratories, refineries and industrial applications. The API gravity scale describes the specific gravity of crude oil and allows different oil qualities to be assessed in a standardised way. A high-quality API hydrometer delivers reliable, reproducible readings of the API gravity.

A high-quality API hydrometer delivers reliable, reproducible readings of the API gravity.

API hydrometers built to ASTM standards

Our hydrometers are manufactured to ASTM E100-19 and ASTM E2995-15a and meet international requirements for measuring the density of petroleum. The measuring range of −1 to +101 °API allows even small density differences to be captured precisely, at a resolution of 0.1 °API. The reference temperature of 60 °F keeps the measured values compliant with the standard and directly comparable.

Versions for different requirements

Our API hydrometers come in several versions, either with an integrated thermometer or as a pure density instrument. Models with an integrated thermometer allow direct temperature monitoring during the measurement, which is particularly useful when determining the specific gravity of crude oil under variable conditions.

Accessories and practical use

For the use of API hydrometers, suitable cylindrical glass stands are available as accessories. They keep the hydrometer stable and upright during the measurement and contribute significantly to accurate results. Combined with a high-quality API hydrometer, they enable reliable determination of both the density of petroleum and the corresponding API gravity.

API hydrometers with calibrated quality

If you need a reliable API hydrometer for professional applications, we offer precise, durable instruments. On request, your measuring instruments come with a works calibration certificate or a traceable DAkkS calibration certificate, so all readings remain documented and traceable over the long term.

FAQ

API gravity is calculated from the measured density using a standardised formula based on density at a reference temperature of 60 °F. From the specific gravity, the API value is derived, which makes different crude oils directly comparable. In practice, the value is usually read straight off an API hydrometer, so no separate calculation is needed.

API gravity indicates the density, or specific gravity, of crude oil compared with water. A higher API value means a lighter oil, while lower values represent heavier, denser oils.

An API hydrometer is used to determine the density of crude oil and petroleum products. It is mainly used in laboratories, refineries and quality assurance, where it allows the properties of crude oil to be analysed reliably.

The density of crude oil depends on temperature. Measurements are therefore based on a defined reference temperature of 60 °F. Models with an integrated thermometer support more accurate evaluation and help to interpret values correctly.

Yes, API hydrometers can be supplied calibrated. On request, a works calibration certificate or a traceable DAkkS calibration certificate is available, so that measurement accuracy is documented and remains traceable.
